ZitatAlles anzeigenThere is a law in China against using foreign electronic payment services for transactions with business entities within mainland China (like Mihoyo); this blocked PayPal until a year ago when PayPal bought a majority stake in a Chinese-based electronic payment service. Until PayPal bought stake in that Chinese company, all of the other Chinese companies that handle electronic payments wanted most of the cut PayPal takes from their transactions to partner with them to process payments and PayPal wasn't willing to give enough of it up to play ball with any of them.
Google and Apple both have partnerships with Chinese companies for payments, as do Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB (Discover notably does not). Those 4 credit cards are your only options for PC payments.
If you use PayPal to buy a prepaid gift card to make a purchase on PC, use American Express. Visa and Mastercard seem to have more issues with getting the payment to go through.
Whether PayPal will be available directly through Genshin Impact anytime soon is a big question mark. Alibaba and Tencent control over 90% of the market share of electronic payment services in China and both of them are working hard to keep PayPal's influence at a minimum within the country. GI's PC popularity was unexpected since Mihoyo has always been a mobile game company and they never planned for so many PC players, so Google and Apple payments working fine in addition to the 4 credit card companies their electronic payment service provider does allow probably seemed flexible enough on their end. Given how recently PayPal has broken into China's market and its minuscule share in the country compared to the major epay players and their subsidiaries, PayPal was probably never even on Mihoyo's radar during development.
